Achievable Waist Reduction
The Waist Reduction rating is the maximum waist reduction achievable of the corset. Just because a corset is rated to a 4 or 5" waist reduction doesn't mean you have to wear them that tightly, you have the choice between comfort & control.
Not interested in Waist Reduction? This rating will give you an idea of the weight of the corsets in our collections, from lingerie to expert level corsetry, as well as the support they offer.
Disguise Rating Explained
The Disguise Rating is how invisible a corset is underneath clothing, relative to the other designs available in our collections.
All Corsets & foundation garments will be difficult to completely disguise underneath bodycon and very tight fitting sheer garments. Dresses with scooped backs can also be problematic when pairing with overbust designs.
Comfort Rating Explained
The Comfort Rating is how comfortable your corset will be. Some fabrics are less suited to longer periods of wear and more theatrical designs can become heavy if wearing all day.
Naturally you will find that your corset will be less comfortable the tighter you lace it, corsetry is about finding the balance between comfort & control that best suits you.
For generations, corsets have found a home in punk-inspired symbols of non-conformity, resistance, and for how straight-up gorgeously rebellious they can look. Before you delve into Corset Story’s unique and stunning punk-inspired range, how about a little history lesson?
The punk-and-corsets story can be traced back to eccentric English fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, who helped bring modern punk and alternative, new-wave influenced fashion into the mainstream. Dame Westwood adored corsets and still avidly uses them in her designs to this day. In 2019, she delighted fashion and corest lovers alike as she announced she would be reviving her iconic 1987 Harris Tweed corsets for a limited time only, retailing in fashion sanctuaries Paris, London, New York, Milan and Los Angeles.
Many designers, from Stella McCartney, to Jean Paul Gaultier, to Alexander McQueen, have utilised the famous corset in their work. But its most enduring impact comes from Westwood, whose vision transformed the corset into a symbol of punk fashion and punk clothing.
How does punk and corsetry interact?
Once again, Vivienne Westwood gives us the answers. When she brought corsets to punk fashion in the 1970s, it was her intention to reframe the controversial garment. Corsets have a long-debated history. Westwood wanted to shift the corset away from its perception as an instrument of female oppression, reimaging it as a symbol of female empowerment. Her aesthetic pushed corsets further into the mainstream, where they could be worn both as underwear and outerwear.
By harnessing the power of corsets in her designs, Westwood’s fashions became known as one of loud and proud expressions, finding the perfect balance between racy and ambitious. The corset was transformed from a historical undergarment to must-have punk clothing, with the attitude to match.
There’s no end to how to style a punk-inspired corset, just like there’s no end to how ‘punk’ should look. It’s all about creativity, customisation and self-expression.
